Do You Know The Florida Slang Term “Jiffy Feet”?
I’ve lived in Florida a long time and I would not have guessed this right, either. Florida has it’s own slang term unique to the Sunshine State. It’s Jiffy Feet.
Preply took a look at state specific slang terms from across the country. The most misunderstood statewide phrase was in South Dakota. They have a phrase called ‘Taverns’. Most people think it means a bar, but in South Dakota it’s slang for a Sloppy Joe sandwich. In California the word “Gnarly” means large waves in the ocean. Think back to Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
One of my favorites is Kentucky. When they say “dirty bird” they mean KFC. That’s also the moniker for the student section at FGCU. I imagine if a Kentucky school ever comes to Fort Myers to play FGCU they’re going to be confused.
But what about Florida and “Jiffy Feet“?
43% of Florida residents thought it meant having talented dance moves. Not even close.
ClickOrlando looked it up and gave us the true meaning of the phrase. “The term originated due to a convenience store chain in Florida called Huntley’s Jiffy Food Stores — often shortened to “Jiffy” — which would sometimes be frequented by customers walking barefoot.”
The terms goes back decades. Many long time residents, especially those in northern Florida, still use the term.
You’ll also be shocked to know that Jiffy Food Stores still exist. There’s actually one in Clewiston at 432 W Sugarland Highway. I’m not sure of their policy on whether or not you need to wear shoes in the store. Clewiston is pretty relaxed on rules, so I’m guessing not.
