An historic solar eclipse happens this weekend. Many people are packing their bags, traveling out of Southwest Florida and into a more direct path to experience total darkness. Meteorologist and scientists say most Floridians will only see about a 60% blockage Saturday. The solar eclipse in Southwest Florida is not the only thing going on. Solar Eclipse Tips

People in 15 states will see the moon completely cover the sun while creating a ring of fire. The next total eclipse is 20 years from now and only falls in three western states according to scientists. The size of this one is a big deal. In Southwest Florida it begins around 1:45.

Do not look directly at the eclipse without pinhole glasses or something similar. It can damage your vision. If you have not purchased special viewing glass, here are some DIY versions. In addition, you need to use a filter if you are viewing through a telescope or binoculars.

The Solar Eclipse in Southwest Florida is not going to be nearly as dramatic as in other parts of the country. However, it will be pretty cool to view. Just do it safely

This event may be what everyone is talking about. However, it is only going to take a up a small part of your weekend. There are other things to keep you and the entire family busy. For instance, expand your cultural horizons at both India Fest and Mural Fest in Fort Myers.

It’s March Madness and many sports fans will be glued to the TV for college basketball games. However, if you want to get outside and see some live action. Baseball is back. This weekend is the season opener for the Mighty Mussels in Fort Myers.

• Mighty Mussels

  It’s opening weekend for Southwest Florida’s favorite minor league baseball team. The Mighty Mussels take on the Tampa Tarpons in a series that runs Friday through Sunday. There are all kinds of family friendly events and specials. Ticket prices vary.  More info here.
  

• India Fest

  It’s been five years since India Fest has been celebrated in Fort Myers and it returns Saturday. Enjoy colorful performances, flavorful food, a fashion show, vendors, music and more. The grand finale is a traditional Holi. In the festival of colors, you’ll get to throw colorful powder into the air and at each other. It is at the Caloosa Sound Amphitheater in Centennial Park, downtown Fort Myers. 11am-5pm. $10. More info here.
  

• Naples Flower Show

  Naples Garden Club partners with the Bontanical Gardens for this event Friday and Saturday. Pick up a passpport map and explore the gorgeous flower displays. There are lots of colorful photo ops so be sure to keep your camera handy. In addition to the displays are educational exhibis, a Garden Market and more. Event included in general admission tickets. • Rock The Arches Music Festival

  This 4th annual festival is Saturday and Sunday at the Lee County Alliance For The Arts in Fort Myers. Saturday features more rock music while Sunday’s lineup is country. The event raises funds to restore the historic arches that used to sit at the entrance to Fort Myers Beach. Tickets start at $13. More info here.

• Downtown Fort Myers Art Walk

  The first Friday of the month, downtown Fort Myers comes alive with art. The galleries feature special exhibits, see artists in action and enjoy all kinds of activities. The event runs from 5-9pm. More information here.
  

• SWFL Mural Fest in downtown Fort Myers

  In conjunction with Art Fest, there is an official unveiling of murals by five teams of local artists. They have been transforming downtown buildings with colorful murals using the theme “The Elements.” Those elements include fire, water, air and earth, as well as harmony & love. Meet some of the artists at the event Friday from 5pm-9pm at All Out Bail Bonds,  downtown Fort Myers. Free. More info here.
  

• Millennial Festival of Grilled Cheese in downtown Fort Myers

  The ultimate comfort food festival returns to Millennial Brewing Company in downtown Fort Myers, It’s the 7th year for the cheesy party featuring food trucks serving all kinds of grilled cheese. Enjoy beer, cocktails, live music, games and more. Saturday noon-9pm and Sunday noon- 6pm. Free. More info here. 
  

• Gulf Coast Big Band Concert In The Park

  This is a free concert in the park with music by the Gulf Coast Big Band. They’ve been performing big band favorites in SWFL since 1991. The next show is Sunday from 2pm-4pm in Cambier Park in Naples. Free. More info here.
  

• Annual Touch A Truck In Cape Coral

  If you’re child loves trucks, this is where you need to be Saturday. More than 40 vehicles are scheduled to be on hand for this interactive event in Cape Coral. Kids can get up close and personal to the vehicles as well as the people who drive them. From fire engines and construction vehicles to buses, all will be there. The event is organized by EHL Fragile X Foundation in downtown Cape Coral along Lafayette Street. 9am to 3pm.  Free. More info here.
