Fort Myers Beach Adds Million Cubic Yards of Sand in Major Beach Expansion
A huge sand placement project began on Fort Myers Beach last summer. Crews have already put down 350,000 cubic yards between Bowditch and Diamond Head, completing the first step of an ambitious restoration plan.
The project is now heading south. Work teams moved their heavy equipment to Estero Island’s 7000 block. The beach there will be expanded by 400 feet, and Times Square will extend another 200 feet more into the Gulf of Mexico.
Work on the south section needs to be done by March 1, 2025. Teams will then return to finish near Diamond Head. This careful schedule helps protect local shorebirds during nesting season.
“We’re eager to get going down here,” Environmental Project Manager Chadd Chustz told Fox 4 Now. “As you know, shorebird nesting season is starting soon and we need to be done before then.”
