Southwest Florida Parents Spend So Much Time In The Car
I’ll call this a rant because that’s what it is. It’s a bunch of statements that I feel don’t really have an easy solution. But, I’m betting will resonate with Southwest Florida parents of kids across Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral and other parts of SWFL
I have two kids, one boy age 16 and one girl age 12. My son is in high school and plays both football and basketball. My daughter is in middle school and does favor basketball, soccer and flag football but this year also decided to give lacrosse, tennis and volleyball a try. At her young age I do encourage her to try everything to figure out what she will like best because in high school, decisions do have to be made.
Again, I’m in no way complaining. I’m putting this out there, letting Southwest Florida parents know, you’re not alone.
Southwest Florida Parents Spend So Much Time In The Car
At minimum I’m spending at least 4 to 5 hours a day in my car. Again, I’ll say I knew I would be spending some time driving, with things spread out across much of Southwest Florida, but holy cow! My kids are in private school, so transportation is not provided. This also applies to lots of parents of kids in public schools. Sure, buses are provided for many of the students, but that doesn’t always mean there’s an activity bus to get them home from practices.
So, what are you doing when your kid gets out of school at 3 o’clock, 30 minutes from your house and they have to be at a game at 4:30? You kill time. I use this time to run errands, take work calls, get a car wash, help with homework, grab food, etc. I can’t tell you how many parents I sit next to on the reg, trying to work from computers in their vehicles, watching Netflix or scrolling TikTok just finding something to do to kill that hour or more. Because, like I said, going home isn’t typically an option. And the poor little siblings that get dragged from field to field and court to court. They’ll be next up, right? The amount of SnapChat filters my daughter has put over my face has reached the thousands. HAHA! It’s quality time.
Watching my kids play sports and doing things that they love is something that I will treasure forever
Don’t get me wrong. I just had no idea that living in Southwest Florida and being a parent of active children would mean that I would spend so much time in my car.
I lived in Pennsylvania for a few years, and we lived in one of those areas where you went to school where you lived. You played sports where you lived. Everything was really within a 2 to 5 minute drive. I guess that sort of spoiled me because my kids began their sporting lives while we lived there. Coming back to Fort Myers, I couldn’t even believe it. Like I said, I’m spending 4 to 5 hours a day in my car… it’s insane. Trying to keep the house up, trying to work, trying to get the kids where they need to be, having dinner ready…and I only have two kids.
How do you parents do it all with 3, 4 or 5 kids or more? Kudos to you guys!
Summer is coming and school may be almost out, but what does that mean? Summer camps! We’ve got this! 💪 Rant over!
