One of my favorite things to do with my family, locally and when we travel, is to visit different breweries. Where I used to live in northern Illinois, there really weren’t that many before I left back in 2017. So imagine how excited I was when I moved to Sarasota and there were breweries everywhere! Then just over a year later, I moved to Fort Myers and in Southwest Florida there are even more. I’m always intrigued by the flavor combinations they come up with. My favorites are usually the wheat or fruit beers, but I like a good porter and am getting into the sours too.
Southwest Florida Breweries Win Big With Best Florida Beer
Every year Best Florida Beers holds their annual Best Florida Beer Brewer’s Ball. This year it was in Tampa on March 3rd.
Fort Myers Brewery was honored with the title of Florida’s Best Large Brewery. They also won gold medals for its OYA Double IPA and Czech Around Pilsner. A silver medal for its Penny Lager and bronze medals for its Chocolate Stout and High 5 IPA.
Scotty’s Bierwerks in Cape Coral took home some hardware as well. They won a gold medal for their Oatmeal Stout, which is actually one of my dad’s all time favorites. They brought home a bronze medal for their German Pilsener as well.
Point Ybel, another Fort Myers brewery also won gold for its Dodgy ESB.

All eyes have not only been on Buckingham Palace over the last week, but also on burgers. National Cheeseburger Day was Sunday. However cheeseburgers are a big deal all year round, especially with football season and tailgating underway. What do you think are the favorite burger chains across the country?
The the Burger Index is a study on consumption preferences and trends in America by Top Data. According to the organization, there has been a significant increase in demand for burgers in the country. The data shows a 10.6% increase in consumption compared to last year.
While there’s nothing quite a like a backyard burger cooked just the way you like it, fast food burgers are still booming. Sometimes you need a quick fix. So where do you go?
When it comes to Florida, the rankings are a little different from the rest of the country. However, Florida always seems to be “a little different” from the rest of the country. Wendy’s takes the top spot for burgers in the Sunshine State. Next on the list, in order from top to bottom are Whataburger, Smashburger, Krystal and Steak n’ Shake.
