Florida’s New Nightmare May be Lurking in Your Backyard
So, you think your Southwest Florida backyard is a perfect oasis, huh? Think again. I just learned about a nightmare, called the New Guinea flatworm. They’re an invasive species that’s already taken over South Florida. According to WPTV, they’re found in almost every backyard! These guys are ready for a full on invasion of the entire state too. Yikes, and just like that… A new fear for 2024 has been unlocked.
These aren’t your garden variety pests. They’re coated in a toxin, but that’s not the main issue. The real danger is the parasite they carry. Ya know, these little critters called rat lungworms. They can carry a potentially deadly form of meningitis that affects animals and humans alike. Worms with worms. Awesome.
Okay, now I feel like inspecting my own Cape Coral backyard. I always thought it was just me, my family and the dogs back here enjoying the Florida outdoors. Little did I know, those creepy New Guinea flatworms might be crashing our barbecue. The idea of these things in the dirt, especially with my dogs sniffing around, really bothers me. What if the dogs eat one? Oh, god. What if I eat one? Now I’m on high alert.
Florida’s New Nightmare:
What’s worse? They’re practically indestructible! Getting rid of New Guinea flatworms may sound like a tough mission, but it’s not impossible. First and foremost, grab a pair of gloves because these worms have an evil superpower. Can you say allergy-inducing toxin? I feel itchy just thinking about it.
The best method, for now, is to pour boiling hot water on them. Sounds cruel, but it’s one of the most effective for killing them. Experts say to be persistent and check your garden regularly. Just when I thought things were looking up in 2024, now I got my face in the dirt looking for parasite-loaded creepy crawlers. Fun.
The Giant African Snail And 12 Other Animals That Are Trying To Destroy Florida
The Giant African Snail has been in the news lately as thousands of these things have invaded the New Port Richey area. According to FDACS, “The giant African land snail (GALS) is one of the most damaging snails in the world and consumes at least 500 different types of plants. These snails could be devastating to Florida agriculture and natural areas as they cause extensive damage to tropical and subtropical environments. The snails also pose a serious health risk to humans by carrying the parasite rat lungworm, known to cause meningitis in humans.”

So it’s not just plants, these things will eat the stucco right off your house. And grabbing one with your hands is a band idea, as they can cause meningitis. They’re so badly trying to control these things that they’ve set up a quarantine area around New Port Richey where “It is unlawful to move the giant African land snail or a regulated article, including but not limited to, plants, plants parts, plants in soil, soil, yard waste, debris, compost or building materials, within, through or from a quarantine area without a compliance agreement.” If you’re not familiar, New Port Richey is along the coast just north of the Clearwater/Tampa area. These things have not been reported in our area and it’d be nice to keep it that way. Stucco eating snails? I just paid 3 grand to have my house painted, no thanks.
The Giant African Snail isn’t the only animal trying to destroy Florida. Ranker took a look at some of the animals that hate us living in this tropical paradise, and they want us out.
