The R.Q. Richards is a smoked old-fashioned at Escondido. It's named after the long-time owner of the historic building that houses the speakeasy.

It’s almost certain to be the hottest new spot in Fort Myers when the doors officially open tomorrow (Friday). Here is a sneak peek at a new downtown Fort Myers speakeasy, Escondido. It’s this week’s Fabulous Find.

Escondido is a true speakeasy. There are no signs indicating where it is. You have to know. It is tucked in the back of Taco Works on Hendry Street. Near the restrooms is a door with a walk in cooler sign. That’s the entrance. Although at our sneak peek the door had been temporarily removed.

When translated the name Escondido means hidden. It’s also a nod to another business the owners have in Mexico.

More About The New Downtown Fort Myers Speakeasy

Escondido is in the historic Richards Building in a spot where there once was a soda fountain frequented by the who is who crowd of the times. You’ll see some of those famous names on the menu and plaques at the bar.

There is an elevated baby grand piano for live entertainment and space in the 70’s themed loft for a DJ. The narrow stairway leading to the loft is lined with historic portraits. Look closely. Their eyes are watching you.

Food And Drink At The New Downtown Fort Myers Speakeasy

The chef, Brad Kilgore, is from Miami and he has designed a menu of small bites that aim to please. We did not get to sample those but they sound fantastic. I can’t wait to get an order of the Caviar Chips N’ Dip. Homemade chips are served with caviar and a chive dip.

The Cheesy Gruyere and Black Truffle Panini sounds pretty awesome too. The menu has lots of sweet treats so it would be a great place to transition from dinner to late night.

At the sneak peek for friends and family, we were able to try most of Escondido’s craft cocktails. The Hibiscus Margarita was a big hit. So was the Ty Cobb made with mezcal, pineapple and spicy bitters for a good kick. I love the way the dirty martini is presented. Click here for a video.

Owners plan to open a similar concept in downtown Cape Coral next year.
