Times Square, a popular tourist destination in Fort Myers Beach, Florida and is considered the heart of Estero Island.
Fort Myers Beach will get a lot brighter as Florida Power and Light puts in 700 LED streetlights along Estero Boulevard to enhance safety and visibility. The lighting project includes underground wiring, new poles, and fixtures.
Safety studies helped decide where to put the lights, FPL reports show. Local residents, like Joanne Vassler and Joseph de Boyer, mentioned more people walking and ongoing construction as the main reasons for better street lighting. "You got to walk a lot of times just because traffic can get so bad that driving takes three times as long," de Boyer said to Fox 4.
Lisa Martin notes that the streetlight installation isn't consistent and that the streetlights stop farther down her street.
Crews will wrap up the work by November 2025.
