Fort Myers has taken over the Old Bridge Marina cleanup after cutting ties with the previous operator. More than 20 abandoned boats now clutter the site — left behind after Hurricane Ian tore through.
This action ends a two-year standoff over cleanup responsibilities at the North Fort Myers site. William Skaggs Jr., who previously held the lease, was stunned by the contract termination. He had been working on plans to bring the facility back to life.
“It's kind of a surprise, so I'm a little lost for words. There's been no procrastination on our part,” Skaggs told Wink News.
Visible to everyone driving over Edison Bridge, the marina's condition draws ongoing complaints. Nearby residents like Michael DeNike are pushing for quick action to clean up the eyesore. He describes the area as an eyesore and an environmental hazard.
