Lee County Domestic Animal Services will provide microchips at no cost during the entire month of December. Owners can bring their pets between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. No appointment needed.

A special event is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 10, running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lee County Sheriff's Office Outreach Center at 10801 Corkscrew Road in Estero. Staff will insert microchips or scan existing ones to verify that owner details are up to date.

"Microchipping is a simple yet vital step to ensure your pet can be identified and returned home quickly if lost," said Animal Services Director Pablo Adorno, according to WGCU. "We're proud to offer this service free of charge to help pet owners."

This agency serves as the county's sole stray intake center. Thousands of animals receive care here each year.

The shelter is located at 5600 Banner Drive in Fort Myers and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Applications to adopt are available online, or you can print one out, fax it in, or complete it at the building. You can also browse available animals.

If you aren't ready to adopt, try fostering. The Weekend Warrior program allows residents to take a shelter animal home for a few days or a week, giving them temporary relief from kennel life. Learn more about fostering or the Weekend Warrior program on the Lee County site.
