Walmart Delivery Drone Shot Down by Florida Man
A Florida man, Dennis Winn, is in a whole heap of trouble for taking a shot at a Walmart delivery drone. This crazy incident went down in Clermont, a town about 26 miles from Orlando. According to USA TODAY, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office got a call about a drone with a bullet hole in its payload. Yeah, someone actually shot at the drone! Come on man. What did that thing do to you?
Witnesses pointed fingers at 72-year-old Winn. When the police caught up with him, he didn’t even try to deny it. He admitted to firing one shot at the Walmart delivery drone with his 9 mm pistol. In the police bodycam footage, he said he tried to scare the drone away, but when it didn’t leave, so he went all Dirty Harry on it. Winn joked about his shooting skills, saying he must be a good shot since he hit it. But he also realized he might need a good lawyer soon.
Now, Winn’s facing some serious charges. He’s been hit with shooting at an aircraft, criminal mischief causing over $1,000 in damage, and discharging a firearm in public or residential property. That’s a whole lot of trouble for one shot at a drone.
Walmart Delivery Drone Here to stay?
Walmart started this whole drone delivery thing back in 2021. By 2022, they were flying drones in Texas, Arizona, and Florida. They teamed up with DroneUp and later added more companies like Wing and Zipline to get the job done. Walmart bragged about completing over 20,000 safe deliveries in two years. They’re even planning to expand the Walmart delivery drone deliveries to 1.8 million more homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
So, while Walmart’s drones are out there delivering your Chick-fil-A and Wendy’s, Dennis Winn is stuck figuring out how to defend himself against some pretty hefty charges. Maybe next time, he’ll just let the drone do its thing.
