Walgreens has made plans to close many underperforming stores across the country, including Florida, with 1 Fort Myers Walgreens location on the list. With more then 800 Walgreens stores in Florida, more than in any other state, it’s entirely possible it won’t be the only Southwest Florida store closing.
Florida has a lot of Walgreens. 9 percent of Walgreens current 8,578 locations are in Florida, with the heaviest concentrations in Miami (53), and Orlando (44), but glancing across the store closing list, Florida is relatively unmentioned. There is one Fort Myers location, however, that has been reported to be closing.

According to data from Usearch, the Fort Myers Walgreens store that will be closing is at 12041 Palm Beach Blvd, Fort Myers, FL 33905. Palm Beach Blvd. is also prone to flooding this time of year, but there’s no evidence that is effecting the decision. No further information was available at this time.
Why Is Walgreens Closing Stores?
There are 92 other store closings on that list besides the Fort Myers Walgreens location on Palm Beach Blvd., but why? Walgreens reported fiscal third quarter earnings that missed expectations. To make things worse, they slashed their full year profit outlook based on what they call a “challenging” environment.
″’We assumed … in the second half that the consumer would get somewhat stronger” but “that is not the case,” Walgreens CEO Tim Wentworth told CNBC.
The plan is to analyze profitability of their locations before making a final decision on which stores they’ll be closing.
Fort Myers Walgreens Options
The closing of the store at 12041 Palm Beach Blvd shouldn’t come as a big surprise. The next nearest store is also on the same road, at 4204 Palm Beach Blvd. The stores are only 5.1 miles apart. There’s also another location on Bayshore, and another near the Forum. Southwest Florida does not have a shortage of drug stores, and it would not be surprising to see another local store show up on this closings list.
