A Florida woman let someone use her phone and here’s what happened. The incident occurred in the Baldwin Park neighborhood of Orlando. Shannon Fraser was walking her dog when she ran into a young boy. The boy was in distress stating that his phone was dead and he can’t find his family and friends. The boy asked Fraser if he could borrow her phone so he could get in tough with his family.

The Florida woman obliged and gave the boy her phone. The boy makes the call, and asks Fraser if he could open the map app so he could get a location. She is about a foot away from him and is watching the boy. They part ways and Fraser believes she has just helped someone in need.

Until a few days later…

Fraser received alerts from her bank stating that her two Venmo transfers were approved! Total $3,800! Fraser was floored. She contacted Venmo and and was told that the account her money was transferred to was set up just 30 minutes before she met the boy. “I feel like this is the new pickpocket,” Fraser said. “They’re preying on your kindness as opposed to just stealing something from you.

Venmo credited everything taken from Fraser but has not given her access to the money until they complete their investigation. Venmo has several options for customers to enhance security to their accounts including enabling touch ID and pin and complete multi-factor authentication.

Fraser will be contacting the police about the incident. “It’s changed me in a lot of ways,” the Florida woman said. “I think our guard has to be up more and that’s the sad part of the story.
